pair of pistols - Reconstruction - 1620
« on: October 20, 2012, 12:28:04 AM »

I do not use Parts wheellock - steel castings.
I use rolled and forged steel . during the documentary, will demonstrate what kind of steel is suitable for individual elements wheellock, and that applies heat and chemical treatment (carburizing).
it will be a lot of work - you have to be patient

Greetings to all :)

I use rolled carbon steel and alloy steel. The reason why this type of steel used :

1. We can make any mechanism wheellock.
2. the possibility of selecting appropriate mechanical properties of steel
3. opportunity to improve carbon  steel enriching
4. the possibility of using the original, old locksmith techniques
5.the possibility of forging steel

1. + 2. + 3. + 4. + 5. = very large resistance and durability, mechanism components.great satisfaction with the work done

You must have in his workshop, basic locksmith tools and basic blacksmith tools. you will need a furnace for steel ( forging, carburizing ). These requirements can be achieved in a simple manner.

Only if Raszpla thinks this is a good idea:

Is there someone on this site that can translate from Polish into English and back to Polish so that Raszpla does not have to rely on an internet translator?  Imagine what our questions look like when a robot has translated them into Polish!  A person with gun building experience is going to do a better job than an internet robot.  It would lighten Raszpla's work load a bit.

I am looking forward to watching this topic, thank you Raszpla.

Raszpla,

Thanks for taking the time to explain the process in such detail. I'm looking forward to learning from you again. I've been reading a bunch about metalurgy and am slowly getting it. This will really help me in my quest. Thanks, Bob

This is a case where form follows function. The lock mechanism dictates the form of the gun, the hand dictates the shape of the grip, all support the barrel with the purpose of sending a projectile enemy-ward. A lovely piece of engineering and art with deadly undertones. Fabulous paradox.

You mention that the point of the sear requires high hardness... I take it that the wheel will also be hardened where the sear comes in contact to reduce wear and provide a smooth contact?

Raszpla;

You are making me very tired just knowing how intently you are working here.  :) Great metal working and nice documentation as you go.
