Chester County SC's Thomas Bennett Rifle
« on: October 22, 2012, 10:32:59 PM »
I am in the process of purchasing a rifle made by my 3rd Great Grandfather
Thomas Bennett.  This rifle is in compromised condition.. it was broken and
the gentleman has done some restoration work on the stock..
It is missing the Lockplate and the Brass Patch box door.. as well as the
inlays.. I wanted to share the photos that were sent to me.. we have agreed
on the purchase price but money or gun has not been transfered
I wanted you all to see this rifle, and what kind of pointers you could provide me
for continuing the restoration. The Gentleman says he has a catalog to order
reproduction parts...
There is a rifle in the Chester County Museum not sure if they will allow me
to make an impression of some of the inlays as well as the patchbox door, with
modeling clay,
to where I could have a jeweler recreate the engravings on a new door..
The signature on the barrel is hard to read but wanted to add it so that
you all can be on the look out for another surviving example... I am sure
there must have been many seeing as this was his trade... they cant all have
disappeared in 175 years..
My question, is there a possibility of finding New Old Stock lockplates, firing mechanisms
etc.. for it to be period rather than Reproduction parts or does that even matter at
this stage of the game?
There are some markings that look like vise teeth that is in the shape of a triangle
could this be a makers mark?
Thanks in advance for any and all responses!

The signature is on photo #5... and I just looked at what I posted and it
is illegible on the photo except I can make it out because I know it is there..
Not really sure how to get a better view for you guys to see it ...
I guess when I get it in my hands I can do a close up shot of just the
signature...

I enlarged the photo of the signature and took another shot of it with the
camera... maybe now you can read the signature.. T. BENNETT

Your gun should be properly restored by an expert in the arena of Kentucky Rifles restoration...of which there are "several." Original lock parts are likely to be available; inlays and patchbox door can be reproduced to be almost identical to what likely would be original as well duplication of engravings. Many will send you emails with suggested names of noteworthy restorers, if you request them to do so. You are lucky to have a family heirloom! We would love to have a biography for the Library.

Sale and exchange of "Bennett Rifle" took place today... I am truly honored to have the opportunity to posess this example of my 3rd Great Grandfather's work.. I will add photos soon... I must take some detailed ones... this rifle will need tender loving restorative care... as I can afford to accomplish this feat..

I'm pleased to see another rifle go back to a family member.  Last week I returned a Shreckengost rifle
to a descendant of it's maker.  It just feels right to do that.  Just wanted to say that I don't think modeling
clay will provide anything to the engraver that good pictures don't so if the museum won't let you model
it, don't worry.  Hope to see the restored photos on ALR when complete.  Congratulations.

Pitmar,
Please contact me by email and I will give you the name of a gunsmith here in the Carolina's that can supply all this rifle needs, including the lock, capbox door, inlays, etc.  He does all of the work I need done on my rifles.
