The very latest shoot as of today.
« on: October 29, 2012, 12:50:29 AM »
Seems some folks were getting prepped for Sandy (the big blow storm)   Only 4 shooters showed up at Garage Rats club.  We said 3 shooters and we'll shoot regardless..25 & 50 yds offhand and 50 yds bench.   Cash and whole smoked hams.  Most of us will be cutting up hams come tomorrow( too tired tonight)

We had a good 'little' shoot.

How'd you folks do?

Geez, Rog, if the Rats held their shoots on Saturday, I could probably make em all.  Sundays are just darn too tough; church lets out at 12:30 and the only one I could make from there is Langhorne.  In fact, your shoot is the only Sunday shoot I go to beside Langhorne.

Talk to those guys and see if they would hold some Saturday shoots.  Attendance might pick up some too.

Between weddings and trips out of state I've missed the last three shoots. Hopefully that has changed shooting season is almost over!

Your okay til you got to Nov 25th.   Garage Rats had their last shoot (for this year) on Oct 28th....   Susquehanna shoots on Nov 25th (Danville, Pa) Wayne Flora 570 275 4349..    Also Nov 4th Orangeville has a shoot (covered range) Thats about 18 or so clicks north of Bloomsburg, Pa   Tom Sudol runs it.   I know its a distance: but there ya go!  Wayne Flora can clue you in on it.

Yup, I am, but the good thing is that I can see Bucks County from my front porch in winter.  I belong to four PA clubs and am active in everyone of them.  I regularily shoot at Brandywine, First Frontier Militia, and Langhorne.  Looking for a few more Saturday shoots.

BTW, I've been getting together with Dale Atkinson and Carl (darn, I should know his last name) on Tuesdays at Guthsville to shoot the muzzleloader.  I rotate the guns I have, so it's a good chance to use 'em all.  I do have my favorites, though.

Where are you guys shooting this weekend?

Probably Carl Schmoyer!!   We expect to head to Orangeville!  Sunday (I'll have time to clean up tree limbs and such around here by then)

OK, Rog, thanks.  Had some damage here, more than just a few tree limbs.  Working on that now.  I was going to shoot this weekend, but that's out the window.  Just some clean-up for the next week or two.

Shoot well.

I will probably go to Blue Mtn.  Will you be there?  Do I need to bring anything other than a rifle or smoothbore and fixins?

Been getting together on Tuesdays with a few ML shooters at the Guthsville club.  Carl Schmoyer is there as well as Dale Atkinson.  Both of these guys are regulars at the monthly shoots at First Frontier Militia (run by Roger Fisher).  A few other shooters show up as well.

The good thing about this is that I get to shoot all my guns and my shooting is getting better.  Although I have never been a "bad shot,"  regular shooting is improving my offhand shooting.  More times than not, when I am shooting alone, I always want to test various loads and shoot from the bench.  Not sure why I have a desire to do this as much as I do since I have worked up good loads for all my guns.  Offhand shooting is the best practice (oops, TRAINING) for shooting the muzzleloader well.

I shot wearing my capote yesterday as I do when I am deer hunting.  I have shorter LOP on my rifles, usually 13 1/4" and this works well with winter clothing.  I have to be very deliberate where I place the buttstock as it will easily slip with the wool blanket material of the capote.

One thing was happening yesterday that was annoying - I had a lot of hangfires.  They weren't too bad; I was able to hold for good shots, but they were there nevertheless.  The flint looked good.  However, when done clening, I replaced the flint anyway, not wanting to chance any more hangfires this weekend as I want to shoot this gun again.

We were talking about getting together again tomorrow morning, but with six inches of snow predicted with the nor'easter, I don't think it will happen.

The bottom line is that regular shooting with the flintlock can't be beat for improving one's shooting.

I hope all is well out in ML land.  Remember, aim small, miss small.

Rifle etc but no smoothbore matches there....Oh yes, and $       Look for their usual 9 or 10 offhand shooters...

So, you getting that fouling rock cleaned/scraped off the breech face?  That would help solve the hangbangs a bit.

Do you need to be a club member to attend these shoots?  As a new shooter it would be a great opportunity to learn.

I always tell those who are interested, "Come!"  The more opportunity one has to shoot, the better.  The more shooters, the more fun we generally have.  After awhile, new shooters will get to know the others, will see them at other shoots, and can learn a lot from those who are more experienced.

Don't hesitate.  Go to shoots, have fun, and improve your shooting while doing this.

Where and when are these shoots? I live in Long Island, and not many people shoot flinters here. Can I get the info on line?
