Been getting together on Tuesdays with a few ML shooters at the Guthsville club. Carl Schmoyer is there as well as Dale Atkinson. Both of these guys are regulars at the monthly shoots at First Frontier Militia (run by Roger Fisher). A few other shooters show up as well.
The good thing about this is that I get to shoot all my guns and my shooting is getting better. Although I have never been a "bad shot," regular shooting is improving my offhand shooting. More times than not, when I am shooting alone, I always want to test various loads and shoot from the bench. Not sure why I have a desire to do this as much as I do since I have worked up good loads for all my guns. Offhand shooting is the best practice (oops, TRAINING) for shooting the muzzleloader well.
I shot wearing my capote yesterday as I do when I am deer hunting. I have shorter LOP on my rifles, usually 13 1/4" and this works well with winter clothing. I have to be very deliberate where I place the buttstock as it will easily slip with the wool blanket material of the capote.
One thing was happening yesterday that was annoying - I had a lot of hangfires. They weren't too bad; I was able to hold for good shots, but they were there nevertheless. The flint looked good. However, when done clening, I replaced the flint anyway, not wanting to chance any more hangfires this weekend as I want to shoot this gun again.
We were talking about getting together again tomorrow morning, but with six inches of snow predicted with the nor'easter, I don't think it will happen.
The bottom line is that regular shooting with the flintlock can't be beat for improving one's shooting.
I hope all is well out in ML land. Remember, aim small, miss small.
