Need a lock builder
« on: November 13, 2012, 02:47:06 AM »
Broke a mainspring on one of TOTWs ' WILLETS" lock today. Got a spring coming but it's a raw casting. Can anyone point me the way to get this tempered by somebody who knows what they are doing? Unfortunately this is not my forte'. :(

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

I wonder if Brad at Cabin Creek would do the job?

There's really only one way to learn how to temper a spring...

The fascination of building for me is stretching my abilities and learning new skills. I had a lock that didn't have a strong enough mainspring so I forged and filed one out of an old hayrake tooth and oil hardened and tempered in a can of oil by burning off the oil. Kit Ravenshear's little books give good instructions on this method.

I also do lock work.  I have built dozens of Rifle Shoppe locks, forged and made my own, tuned all sorts of repros for competition, and performed repairs.  Feel free to contact me if you need lock or spring help.

Thanks,
Yancey

I'm a gunstocker, not a gunsmith. There's quit a difference.

I'm a stocker, a dabbler, and a doodler. I don't make barrels, and I don't make locks.

Mike,

I never did get that lock or spring.   I assume you decided to do it yourself.

I hope to make one all handmade gun (rifle or pistol) before I die.   I guess that makes me an apprentice gunsmith.

Mike,
Yes there is quite a difference. I've worked on my own locks and triggers for about 28 years now. Mainly because I couldn't find anyone local that did it so I had to learn.  As far as stocks I never got into that except repairing a few cracks through the years. I always wanted to learn, but I have a pretty demanding job working for the state of pennsylvaina. But on June 8th of this year thats going to end because I'm retiring with 29 1/2 years service. After I retire I should have the time to do some of the things I want to learn. Plus I'll be retired at 54 years old so I'm still young enough to do stuff.
