muzzle plug/cover anyone?
« on: November 26, 2012, 09:36:03 PM »
I often use/d electrical tape over the muzzle of moderns when hunting to keep foreign material and moisture away from the bore.  A pal once put a couple inches of mud into his rifle that way...and was smart enough not to ring his bbl.

Wondering if anything was ever used BITD for such, or if anyone does such now.

it's about to rain and i'm about to tape my modern* muzzle...no need collecting moisture in the tube while i'm out there.

*all i have just yet, sold the T/C to fund part of my current build...and a fella has to eat.

BITD?

I've read in Field and Stream, etc. about guys using electrical tape when hunting with inlines. But no personal experience with this.

Re-run of something I posted in the past:

I had to make up a decorative brass tompion (muzzle plug), like the ones we used aboard ship in the Navy for the big guns, for a 3 inch bore cannon last week.  It got me thinking.

Not long ago Ron Scott was kind enough to send me several small scrap pieces of exotic woods to make up some of the whisk and vent pick sets I have made.  I had one piece of burl locust that was long enough to make the handle for a vent pick and there was enough material left to do something else with.  So I made this tompion (sometimes spelled as "tompkin") for a .50 cal English rifle I am working on.  This is a simple one with a split wood shank.  I am making several others out of horn, bone, antler, etc., with more elaborate muzzle retention features like an expandable leather washer.  Fun to make and keeps the rain, snow, dirt out of the bore.

Here is the original thread - a few pros and cons about tompions, but I have never had any trouble and I have fired several of them away on purpose just to see what happened...no problems.

In the army, in the tropics, condoms were often seen festooning the end of a barrel. Some used those rubber thumb thingee's women use while sewing, others made do with a plastic bottle cap. Just a short time field expedient while mucking about in the bush during monsoon season.

thanks Dave!

Yes the rush of the air between the projectile and the muzzle clears the obstruction  quite effectively and to no measurable effect-i was quite satisfied with that before i started doing such years ago...but i'll make mine less-a-fancy, so i don't have to go lookin' for it, or use tape when nary one is watchin'.

and it the rain just set in... i'll be creepin' all over them woods in the morn.  damp leaves are sooo nice for still hunting.

BITD=Back in the Day.  there's probably a list sommers... ;)

read the other thread.  yes, the devil is in the details.  glad i got those handed to me before i whittled out a plug.  your design appears to have all them details nailed down.

With in the last 10 years, the Army has been issuing plastic caps to go over the end of the flash supressor.  It is a black plastic and is just like any plastic cap that would be found to cover a piece of pipe during transport.  Shoots right off. Keeps the sand out!

I did get a flash pair of tompions for both my Enfield rifle muskets,  I see they are adjustable. Not sure when I may use them.

Cheers

They have had these caps for some time.
I used to use an "Elephant Rubber" (a multi-layer water bag) at times back in the day for an M16.

Sometimes the dust was bad too.
It kept it clean when I was the TC.
