Newbie patch question
« on: December 01, 2012, 02:39:50 AM »
I am new to BP shooting.  I have a long rifle made in about 1850 and just bought a percussion replica pistol.  In my search for items needed to support shooting these firearms I have never seen anything to keep your patches.  I know about patch boxes on some long rifles, but how is it done when you don't have one and you are storing lubricated patches???

You can go fancy or plain in either brass or copper with "snuff" boxes if your patches will fit in them or you can just use an old Altoids or similar tin box.  Burn the paint off an old and empty Altoids box and you'll be looking fairly period correct/historically correct (PC/HC) or buy one without any logo or paint on it from the get-go.  Even old plastic 35 mm film containers work just fine.

I have three different sized tin boxes in my shooting gear, one holds jags, ball pullers and other small tools, another I poured lube into and the last one holds lubed patches.  I had a pocket in my shooting bag be made just big enough to hold my "tin of tools" snuggly inside.

I use a small tin that Altoids mints came in. I wire wheel or burn the paint off and carry it in my bag. These work very well for me. I have also used cap tins.

Be aware that putting your tools in a tin box is kind of loud. I lined an Altoids tin with leather and used that in one of my kits but now I use a leather bag or a small folding wallet.

A # 10/11 cap can is nice up to about 50 caliber, especially with the paint burned off and scrubbed up a bit. Holds about 30 or more lubed 0.014s.  Lon
