Track of the Wolf Bucks County rifle kit - Update #2
« on: December 07, 2012, 03:02:10 PM »
As you know, I'm building a Bucks County flintlock rifle using a kit from Track of the Wolf. In this update I'll inlet the lock plate into the stock and see where the flash hole on the barrel is in relation to the flintlock's pan. That will tell me how much I'll need to move the barrel before installing the breech plug.

I watched your video (without sound). I assume you are going to move the barrel to line up where you have determined the flash hole goes. I'm wondering what you will do if you are using a swamped barrel. Just curious.

Just a question,maybe the answer is obvious to everyone else.When you measure with your calipers you measure to the rear edge of the bp sealing ledge.If you move forward only 1/8"  with a 1/4" liner wouldn't you hit the sealing surface of the breech plug?It would seem better  to me to move forward at least another 1/16" to be sure.You still would be near the bottom of the powder column but not disturbing bp seal.

Keb;

I am a beginner so only have one experience to relate (In other words, take this for what its worth). With a Jim Chambers Lancaster pre-carved stock and a 44" swamped Rice barrel (Golden Age lock) I needed to move the barrel back just shy of 1/8th inch - there was no problem with the barrel being swamped except it getting slightly tighter in the wood at the muzzle end. When finished there were no gaps in wood/barrel fit but then there was a great deal of scraping to bring the barrel down to final position. I did all of this at the same time, bringing it back and down and using lamp black to show the high spots. Breech plug seats snug to the shoulder at one-half inch and I will be using the one-quarter inch Chambers White Lighting touch hole liner.

Isn't the fence on the lock suppose to be in line with the back of the breech?
That can hardly happen when you start moving stuff around just to get a liner to clear the breech face.

Keb, not all  originals had the fence flush with the breach. I personally like to see that but its no big deal in the long run up to a point. I have shortened up the threaded section on a couple of barrels  because the plug threads were a shave over 5/8".  This extra length was making things look a little weird with the lock being way too forward for correct achitecture.

This is my first build using a kit, and it will probably be my last one. The pre-inlets force you do do things a certain way. I prefer to use a pre-carved blank, but I'm committed to this project now, so "talley ho!"

Thanks for posting these videos-  i've always wanted to tackle a gun build but didn't quite have enough knowledge (or nerve) to do it.  I signed myself up for Chambers class next spring to build my first one and i'm very excited.  Your videos are a great resource for me to become acquainted with techniques.   I look forward to seeing more of them.
