Finished bison powderhorn with silver filigree fittings.
« on: December 25, 2008, 03:18:07 AM »
I finished the powderhorn today. I waxed it with Liberon antique wax which is mostly beewax , carnaubawax and mineral spirits. The effect looks good.
The buttplug is black walnut with a simple silver dome. the dome is attached with a screw, soldered on the inside of the dome. The peg is made of ash fitted to a hollow silver ball and hand made silver jewel chain.  I had originally planed to have a ring of silver "tacks" around the base of the butt plug, but they looked out of place with the rest of the silver work. So I replaced them with a silver name plate, attached with 8 silver rivets. It was hard to take good pictures of the powderhorn.Because of the large difference in contrast, the silver tended to get over exposed and lose detail.

Close up of buttplug.

Close up of middle filigree ring.

Close up of spout.

Best regards

That is a really beautiful horn you made Rolfkt. The silver work is fantastic, and the horn looks nothing like that horn you started out with  ;D  I think the waxing came out great.

That is utterly beautiful. The only problem I would have is actually carrying something that beautiful in the woods. We all know everything is for carrying in the woods too, right? Fantastic work.

Well Rolf,

This one turned out extremely good. We don't often see anything that elaborate over here. What will you do as an encore??

Thank you all for your kind remarks.
I plan to start on that large bison horn you were kind enough to sell me. Hopefully it's thick enough to support the design I had originally planed. On this one I'd like to:

1. carve the spout octagonal (not spiral) and inlay 4 silver filigree panels
2. two filigree rings at the base with a row of filigree "tacks" between
3. a silver filigree buttplug based on a "slange" brooch pattern.
4. a heart shaped filigree spout plug.

Best regards

Rolfkt,

That is simply beautiful work.  I've greatly enjoyed following this project as you did it and seeing the end result is inspiring (or intimidating!) to say the least.  I also want to thank you for taking the time to do the tutorials on that silver filigree work.  I'll probably never do any but love learning how things like that are done.

I'll look forward to following the progress on your next horn.
