We had a local politician we called "Gimlet Goober" because he
hailed from an area known as "Gimlet Holler"just across the CSX (former C&O)
railroad main line.

Dr. Boone;

  I thought you had bought a fine piece of early artillery history, not some wood workers tool. You got me all excited for nothin', and on my birthday to boot. Have a Merry Christmas.

Tim,
You will never go back to drilling pilot holes once you use a gimlet.  I have been a satisfied gimlet customer for years.  They make aligning the pilot hole so much easier for a one man shop.

And I've been on the look out for one unsuccessfully ever since.

Dr Boone, where did they get yours?

Dave,

I have used gimlets for years for screw holes but I never thought they would be of use for barrel pins and such.  Of course, the gimlet I have is of much too large a bore for barrel pins.  Do you have any tips on how you use them for barrel pins?  That is an aspect of a gun build I always screw-up, no pun intended.

John,
I think I must of confused you.  I do not use gimlets for drilling barrel pin holes.  I only use the gimlets to drill pilot holes for wood screws.  For drilling barrel pins I use an alignment fixture.

You'll discover it to be some of the best tool money you've spent. They are very handy. A lot of old technology still shines--you know, like flintlocks.

I received email today from Garrett Wade and their 7 piece gimlet set is on sale.  They also have a couple other interesting items on their inventory reduction sale.

Yes, I just got mine last week and am happy to have them at "full" price-I got some other stuff too.

BUT as i perused around for something else that i might need (tool hoarding) i found a surprising amount of "horrible freight" type items at GW, some with reviews that reflect the normal issues (you get what you pay for) with sub-standard products.  Be Aware, or as Caesar might say Caveat Emptor.

Them Gimlets though--appear to be worth the money, i've not worked 'em too hard yet.

I did get them from Garrett Wade.  Sorry I was so slow responding.   I the 1/16" looks like it might just work for pin holes...??   But I got them for starting Buttplate and patch box screws etc,
