Barrel makers can't keep up with their rifle barrel orders.They make more money on rifle barrels as opposed to pistol barrels.Hence a shortage of pistol barrels :( :(

Mitch.......you hit that one right on the head.    When I was making barrels, we did very few pistol barrels, mainly because
it kept me from making rifle barrels...........Don

Hmmm.....one 42 inch long rifle barrel.....and a hack saw.....equals four 10-1/2 inch long pistol barrels right??? ;D

I once bought a 32" x 15/16" parallel octagonal .45 cal x 1:22 twist barrel from Numerich.  It made three pistols.  The most accurate pistol barrel I've ever seen - almost.  My Richard Hoch .60 cal on my Hawken pistol is THE most accurate.

Green Mt. also makes very accurate pistol barrels, when you can get them.

this will cause a stir....
had 2 .54 cal pistols..
1 was 1:22 twist one was 1:66 twist
both were 8 inches long, both flintlocks
could tell very little difference in accuracy..
was shooting at the end of a log about 40 yards away, about 8 inches dia,
each pistol hit the end of the log each and every time
of course wasnt a 1 hole group, but accurate enough..
killed many ground hogs with both pistols

What I am thinking of is building a dragoon pistol but all the barrels I am finding out there are at least 2-4 inches too short.  I am looking into at least a 14 inch barrel. 

So, what about using a shotgun barrel? Cut that down and thread it... I come accross good barrels quite frequently and conversion to a pistol should be easy... their round barrels and usually arround 20-24 inches long... etc. probably a 20 or 16 ga barrel should work.  Any opinions?

Chris,

I had Ed Rayl make me a pair of brass Dragoon barrels in .62 cal. not long ago.  They are 12 inches long, but I think he will make them as long or short as you like.  I didn't have to wait that long for them either.  Don't know what his situation is now.  I also bought a barrel from him that had a good rifled .58 bore, but the outside was messed up during the milling of octagonal flats.  He sold it to me very inexpensively and I chucked it up in the lathe and turned it round and tapered to make an excellent pistol barrel.

This pair was made with one barrel from the Rifle Shop and one from Ed in steel.  12 inch barrels:

Kevin Blackley has 14" 0.625 cal tapered round pistol barrels suitable for English and French military pistols.  The finished barrels fitted with breech plugs are expensive but you can also get unfinished blanks for a lot less.

Dave & Taylor,

Thanks...these were fun to build (except for the butt cap inletting) but if I ever make a pair of anything again, I will build them in parallel.  These were built in series and it seemed much harder to get them to match that way.  They are a $#*! of a lot of fun to shoot two at a time.  No sights, but I surprised myself at what I can hit just sighting over the tang screw and the muzzle.
