Percussion Rifle signed UNION

Anyone ever seen a rifle with barrel markings like this?  I bought this while visiting family in North Carolina over the Holidays.  The lock is marked PENNSYLVANIA RIFLE WORKS and the barrel is stamped UNION with a bird scene similar to lock markings that I have seen.  The rifle is stocked in plain maple with brass hardware.  No entry thimble.  The barrel is 41 13/16-inches long and straight sided, .975-inches across the flats and .37-caliber.  Any thoughts as to who and where it may have been made would be appreciated.
