new Getz gun
« on: January 22, 2013, 12:59:21 AM »
Gents- after a year and a half of begging and whining, I finally convinced Don Getz to make me a gun.  Here is what he and his son, John, passed on to me shortly before Xmas.  Don calls it the "staple gun' due to some fancy copper work he put on the buttstock along a surface check in the wood.  My kids call it Frankengun.

Typical Getz barn gun, no butt or side plate.  56 inches overall, 40.5 inch Getz swamped .58 cal barrel, modified Jeager lock, blued barrel, old Jaeger trigger guard which was done up by Tom Curran (thanks, Tom), and wooden patchbox.  I couldn't be happier.  I've been bugging Don about this since last year while I was in Afghanistan.  I guess he never thought I was serious.  Hopefully Don or Tom will chime in with some more comments on the gun or to answer any questions you gents have.  The gun will be at the Getz table for the show in Lewisburg on 1-2 FEB.  Hope to see ya there.
Jeff

Jeff. Glad to see you are home and in receipt of the staple  gun. A gun made by Don will be an heirloom for your family.  And take a little venison too hopefully!!

Is that a real crack in the stock or is it a "manufactured" crack just to have a reason to add the staples?? I doesn't matter.....it's great!! Now I got The Monster Mash song stuck in my head!! ;D Ya know...a Frankenstein manequin holding the rifle at the Artisan Show would be a hit!!!!

Thanks Jeff.........There are some unusual pieces on this gun.   The lock was copied from an original Jager lock by Larry Zornes.
It works fantastic, willl put glowing sparks on the floor.    The trigger guard came from Tom Curran, via Reaves Goehring.   It
seems that Reaves copied an original Jager trigger guard which John bought, sent it down to Tom who filled in all of the fancy
engraving, had a rubber mold made of it and had some cast.  The stock was done by Mark Weader from a pattern that we
supplied, kind of Christian's Springish.   The checks in the wood were there in the blank but we went ahead and had Mark copy
it.  It was a fun gun to do and it will be on my table at the Lewisburg show....check it out........Don

I wish I'd thought of the staples :)!  That is a nice stock profile.  I can't decide whether I would like it better with toe-molding or just like it is: The step almost disappears without moulding, but then it is a nice surprise when it shows up and the shaping in that area is well-adjusted.  I guess you are already pushing the boundaries of Barn Gun without adding too much molding, anyway!

Real neat gun, Don.

I really like the look of the schimmel butt with a wooden box.
Question: what does the sliding lid spring catch on if you don't have a metal buttplate?

Tom........when I first finished the box lid it had an unwanted space below the dovetail part, so, I cut out and fit a steel
plate to give the "latch" something to hook onto, worked out pretty good..........Don

Looks Great Don, the staple idea is pretty kool.
Thank You for your service Jeff, I'll bet being home and the rifle at Christmas was a great feeling.

In answer to Acer's question, here is a picture of the catch for the patch box spring.

Don came up with a neat, simple solution to the engineering problem that would have stumped me for weeks.

Actually, Jeff is lucky to get this one.    I've built a lot of guns, this is No. 96, and I really liked this one.   But, I will be 80
next May, I no longer hunt, and it really gave me a lot of satisfaction to hand this gun to Jeff.   If you see Jeff at the show,
stop and shake his hand, a great guy.......Don
