Attaching a barrel underlug to a round barrel
« on: January 27, 2013, 05:38:39 AM »
I'm working on a pistol and need to attach the underlug. Do I just solder it on with standard solder and propane? Any tricks or tips would be appreciated.

If you have a nice pad for the lug, and a good fit, regular plumber's solder is just fine.

This rr standoff is with Plumber's solder, cleaned up, then cold blued. It has enuff surface area to be quite sturdy.

So far, I have soldered underlugs on only one barrel and it worked fine. I used the low temp solder TOTW sells. One tip, and I learned this the hard way, is that when heating the underlug to tin it, apply the heat slowly with as small a flame as possible. At first, I was overheating the underlug which burned off the flux so the solder wouldn't flow and adhere to the metal. Once I figured this out, it was surprisingly easy to solder the underlugs.

I like the low heat silver bearing solder made by Sta-Brite. It melts at about 400 degrees and is three or four times as strong as regular plumbers solder.

The solder I bought from Track of the Wolf is the Stay-Brite.

Thanks guys! I feel better already. I'll check out that sta brite stuff and try tinning it first. I was really intimidated from the two experiences where I tried to solder hooked breeches and tangs together, never could get it right. Maybe tinning it first would have helped. Acer, cool sight!

Firsrt off,  the round bbl is sanded to bare metal like one would shine shoes. Then the 220 grit paper is laid on the bbl and the lug is rubbed back and forth to not only expose bare metal but to sand the bbl shape onto the lug. The Swif 95 solder paste is thinly  applied to both surfaces , both parts are  loosely clamped together and heated w/ a Mapp Gas torch. No muss...no fuss....Fred

I'm with you smart dog dave - seems to me that Acer has a habit of springing cool as can be shoot'n irons on us in bits and pieces and at odd times. A mere peek if you will.

WE demand you show us ALL of those beautifully made guns to us all at once Mr A Saccharum! Stop teasing us.
