michigan hog Shoot.
« on: January 28, 2013, 11:51:37 PM »
The weekend of Feb 8,9,10 in Tecumseh Mi,is the 43rd Hog Rendezvous. Back in the day,we shot for a real hog that was cooked and ate at the shoot. It was flintlock only back then. It's been awhile since I've been, but I'll be there the entire weekend.

This will be a shoot that i will be doing A LOT of reminiscing! I have ton's and ton's of GREAT memories and story's from past shoot's there, and it will also be a kinda sad one too.

Some of my dear friend's from years past are gone in body, but there in spirit. Bill Walters,Ken Stuck,Hank Wiesnewski,Mike Phip's(moved FAR away)and so on.... I WILL be quitetly smiling A LOT! I've already started.

Sounds like there's been a lot of changes since you were last there. We now shoot a woods walk each day. The days you speak of mostly buckskin types made up the crowd. Not so much these days.

Good eating, good competition, knife & hawk, a good party although we seem to be out living the party mode a bit, you'll see a few familiar faces. Homer is in Fla., Bud is doing fair. Depew, maybe. Perry, maybe. Hack, of course.

I kinda wish I lived up north aways like close to PA. and some other states ya'll have so much going on in the Blackpowder stuff than down here in South Ala. :(  But I'm a warm weather guy and would go into hibernation for the winter if I was up there.

Jack and I may travel together. He wants to stay in the cabin.

Yup, lots changed. I haven't been to the turkey shoot since ya'll went to frozen turkey's! I know, I have listened to all the reason why, none valid, 4 lawyers in the family agreed that you had NO worry's,but too late now. I'm still going to have a GREAT time!

IMHO Part of the reason the live turkeys went was the work & mess involved. Many of the people in the center of the club no longer shot for them cause of the mess. Also I remember making the point that if there was no problem legaly speaking that we should send the local sheriff & humane society an invite. The last straw was a siituation in PA, as I recall, involving something simular. Can't remember the exact deal.

It's not too late for your club to set up a live turkey shoot.

That is right at the top of the list! And your right,it IS A LOT of work. Same reason Port Huron stopped the 200yd sillouette shoot, not enough help.

I got the biggest kick at the look's I got rootin' around the gut pit for all the gizzard's,iver's,and heart. People actuallythrew them away!

Ok 1chunker,please make sure you introduce your self to me,I'm alway's glad to put faces to names here. I'm easy to find,I'm usually in first place! LOL LOL :o JUST KIDDING! I'll be camping in a Walters Trappers tent.

That all scares me as I'll be in the other trapper. Mostly hanging around the swamp. We got a 16 X 32 army tent we habitat. Good place to warm up. Heading over this afternoon to set the thing up.

Pathfinder, Last time I went to a Hog Shoot, LLloyd, Packler & I camped. Someone hit a deer on their way to the site and gave us one of the hind quarters. We roasted it and ate off it the whole weekend.
Them was the days. I miss them times (big sigh)

I'd love to come to WW. We may make it but it's a long way from the Ohio River. It'd be good to see some of the old guys. Tell Leonard I said "Hi" when you see him.

I remember the fire. If I'm not wrong one of the same guys burnt a lean-to a year or so later.  Was you there the time Pete Peterson set up the teepee made out of the .0005 thick transparent bed sheet. & had some gal with him.  Good show. How bout the time Depew got #$%@! & slept on top of his car. Or the legendary fires he tended in his teepee? We all figured that, in preperation for the shoot the wood was soaked for weeks to get the moisture content proper. Then the logs were carefully piled on a the fire in a manner that allowed pretty much no air whatsoever in to create the maximum amount of smoke.  The hams they smoked in there were some of the best I ever had.

Well 1Chunker,i tried,i really did. i got there Thursday afternoon, setup wasawakened through the night by the rain and wind. Snug and comfy in mt Trapper, woke up to everything frozen and snow covered.

After a little chow in the club tent, My self, hack Steve and Serge set up the course. You DID mention a wood's walk both day's,but i didn't realize the "Hog" shoot it's self was gone. I LOVEd shooting the little "piggy". I have quite a few from over the years on my target wall.

Anyway, the accident I had a few years ago along with being 10 years older has made winter campimg the most uncomfortable undertaking I can think of.
Again,comfy/cozy in the lodge, but the neropathy caused by the semi made me miserable!

So I headed home Friday afternoon,a "beaten man"! My plan for next year is to drive there Friday late morn, hang for the day,hit a hotel at night, then back on Sunday morn to finish the shoot.

I feel like $#@* having to miss it like this. I'll get over it though! I really had to try to know for sure. What's worse is my wife was right!

"Your to old and broken to do this winter stuff anymore!" I HATE when she's right!

Sorry you had to call it quits yesterday Pathfinder, it all sounded like a lot of fun and something I'd like to attend if I was a little closer than 1300 miles away.

said some stuff and... being 10 years older has made winter campimg the most uncomfortable undertaking I can think of. Then he said some more stuff...
My take on this is all winter camping should be done in Florida. Heck no. All outdoor activity should be done there.

What will I do with all the blankets I bought for camping in the cold weather?

And too make things even WORSE,Getting the mail I didnt realize the ditch on the other side of the road from the mail box was THAT close to the road, and yup,you guessed it,in the ditch up to the middle of the doors in snow!

After AAA got me pulled out by a driver I've seen before,he looks at me and askes,"Ya want me to wait till ya get around your corner?" Smart alec!

I'm still a little bummed by the events of the last few day's. Picked up a script to help the hind feet. Maybe next year!

Don't feel too bad. Of course I only live 5 miles from the shoot, but opted to enjoy my hot bath & bed each night rather than brave the ice & snow.  Serge aced the course on Saturday. He was having a good time as it was the first test of a gun I built for Ilah Pratt 25 years ago & Serge recently bought from her.  So far nobody has managed to fall down & bust up anything. We'll see what today brings, a little rain on that ice should prove to be about as slippery as snot on a green board. Join us in August there, it's a $#*! of a lot more attractive.

Did you actually put into print that your wife was right? Got to believe that has to hurt, we feel for you. We're all in this together.

Send them to me!!!!! ;D

I have not been big on camping out in the winter since Boy Scouts when my legs slid halfway out of the army pup-tent and the temp hit 17 degress. It took the better part of an hour before I could feel my feet the next morning.  The army was the same way for me.  I managed, but my feet took a toll.

I am willing to give it a try again, so long as I can stay "DRY"!!!

Waking up to a frozen sleeping bag from a mix of rain and snow over night, Just isn't very comfortable.
