Baldric For Willyard/Secrest Hunting Sword
« on: January 30, 2013, 09:47:09 PM »
My first Baldric. 1 1/2" wide of 8/9 0z. vege-tan. Sewn with 6 ply linen thread. Buckle is hand made from 3/16" brass sheet, and has a triangular iron tongue, per "Sketch Book '76", and some originals I've seen. The leather was left natural and finished with oil. As mentioned, this is my first, so critiques and or suggestions are welcomed.

Looks really nice LRB!  Your buckle would have looked a little neater if you'd made the belt a little wider (1/4" or so) to fill the buckle, or made the buckle a little smaller.  Great workmanship though.  What a great hunting companion!!

I fully agree Taylor. It is a tad larger than necessary. The pattern I made looked right, but not the finished buckle.

I have found if I cut down the area of the sewn fold over the buckle and oversize the rest it fills the sloping sides of that buckle much better. I have also had everything perfect in construction only to find the strap shrunk in width due to my over agressive burnishing of the edges, thus stretching the strap in length and reducing width. ;D

That would help, but I think the main problem was that the strap leather measured a bit less than it was marked, and the buckle came out a bit over sized. Maybe next time I will buy a wider strap and do as you suggest.

You, or I should say Willyard, are all set for some wild hog hunting as they do in south Georgia and Florida LRB. Congratulations on a well done project. I like what you have accomplished.
