Wanted to make a one piece cows knee and fit it to one of the guns. Have alot of leather scraps about and thought this might be one way of lowering the pile...

GIZAMO, Great looking cows knee. If your trying to reduce your pile of leather, Im interested in in purchasing some.

I like it also. Never seen one designed like that. Good thinking :)

Looks like it should work, now with some thing to seal around the pan you will be set.

The problem with the design is it has to be custom fit to individual guns. Unfortunately, one size doesn't fit all.  They are very quick and easy to make...next time I make one - I'll do a tutorial.  That is, if anybody is interested.

I use thin buckskin that's been greased, takes up a lot less room in the shooting bag.Just got in from a day of squirrel hunting and i used mine in the heavy snow,to tired right now, will post pic's tomorrow.  The kind I make will fit a variety of gun's. Mark Baker has the design in his vol 1 of "Journey"

With a greased cover sealing the pan isnt neccasary.

I'd like to see it... Thought about doing the rawhide version that Mark Baker makes in his video. Pretty neat idea about wet forming it to the gun.

I don't suppose you'd forward a sketch of the cow's knee...I think it might fit more rifles than you think with little or no modification.  It looks like your's extends a bit further forward on the rifle and back on the wrist a little more than the one I made several years ago.  I agree that if you wax the leather there's little need to seal the pan.  I don't know how snow would get to your pan with a cow's knee that seems to fit as well as your's does.  Nice job!!

I made a good working one out of dropcloth canvas dipped in beeswax. Made from scarps, rolls up into nothing and works.

Ya know, there are IIRC 3 surviving cows knees, one of which was on display at the Ft Pitt museum awhile back as part of their exibit on the American Rifleman.

The one I use is made of lightweight barktan, heavily greased.  I roll it around my shotpouch strap and tie it there  It is pretty much universal, works on everthing from my longland to my Rifle to my Trade Gun.

My cows knee is made from oiled buckskin and to save room in my shooting bag, it is tied to the back strap of the shooting bag.

Dr. Boone, great looking case! Growing up and hunting in western Oregon rain forests I usually carried my gun in a heavy wool case. worked pretty good but slow to remove. Even if it's stopped raining the water that falls of every tree you bump will drench you. Hope you don't mind if I try your idea out. 8)

My haversack is where a often carry it.  I also have a small belt pouch that it rolls up and fits into!!  Get one from Curt Lyles. http://www.cdlyles.com/
