Banded horn....take two

Another southern banded of the same tye styling and construction.  I have included some of the construction pics as a little treat. 

- horn is approx 15 inches on the outside curve
- tip is two piece antler and 2 1/2 inces long
- base is approx 2 1/2 inches across
 - base and stopper are cherry, button on base is antler
- bands and tip applied with metal pins...base band and plug applied with 5 wooden pins.

That is some kind of great work!. I love the in progress pic's. Really gives you a good sense of what it takes to go from a pile of "Stuff" to a MASTER PIECE!

Very nice indeed!  May I ask what the compound is you used to color the horn and antler that shows up as a layer of black crust on the one photo before being polished out?

Jerry..It is minwax paste finishing wax mixed with black powdered tempura paint.  I coat the horn with wax, heat more wax with paint applied and rub it util it starts to "gum up".  I then heat again and let cool completely then buff off what I do not want.

I have been doing scrmshaw and engraving since age 12..I am 44 now so I guess that makes it uh...32 years.  I have been building horns since age 15, but only rudimentary ones.  I got serious about the craft in 2004 so I guess I can say I have been building horns and accoutrements for 8 years.  First attempt at the southern stuff though.
