Lancaster Squirrel Rifle (J.Hagy/Hagee)
« on: February 19, 2013, 05:13:59 PM »
This is a little .36 cal Squirrel rifle I just finished up.It was on my table at Lewisberg still in the white for those that stopped by.It is based on the work of a Lancaster Builder by the name of John Hagy/Hagee.Not a copy of a particular rifle but as if I trained and worked in Hagy shop. Thanks to all who critiqued it an Lewisberg and comments are welcome as always.

Very nice Mitch! I really like your carving and the patchbox is Hagy all the way! What are the barrel dimensions?

That is a beatiful looking rifle! My first build is going to be a squirel rifle. Can you offer some information on the parts used?

Barrel width across the flats if straight or swamped, length?
lock type used?
trigger used?

So delighted to see something like this- some great clean Golden Age rifles are out there to emulate.    Looks right.  Carving is terrific.

I have a soft spot for Lancasters and this one is special.  Any idea what it weighs?

A classic beauty!!  The squirrels will stand in awe as they wait to be knocked off!!  The carving is exquisite!! and the finish is nice too.

Very nice!  Now, just don't do like a lot of these guys and just call it a squirrel rifle, go out and shoot some critters with it!!  And post pics!!  :)

Very nice, clean looking rifle, Mitch!  Love the color, and well executed carving.  I also like the look of the brass lock plate, really well done all around.  Thanks for posting the photos!

Mitch, you have made my day. Absolutely beautiful. The carving is gorgeous.Your engraving is well done with just enough , but not too much . What did you use for stain and finish? The squirrels will most likely overun you, just beggin to be shot with that rifle!

What a wonderful looking piece,  With my very first build in the planning stages this gives me something to aspire to someday be able to make a rifle that looks this good!

thanks for the pictures

Glad you like the finish. It's two aplications of Aqua fortis of my making blushed in between each application. Then I put a sealer coat of seed lac. Then Several top coats of Jim Chambers oil finish.Once it's well dryed I rub it back with pumis and rottenstone in oil till I get the look that I want.

Really nice Mitch. I like the overhead view of the wrist as it shows the slimness of the rifle.
