powder horn with different spout
« on: March 01, 2013, 12:45:29 AM »
i'm working on a powder horn for my son to use. He has a neuromuscular condition which has weakened his fingers so he can't grasp the plug to open a powder horn. At one time, tack had a valve kit, but they are no longer in stock. i was wondering if anyone here might have an idea of a means to make it easier to open the powder horn without the usual round plug/violin peg etc?
thanks very much for your attention

Are you needing a push button valve like these? http://www.powderhornsandmore.com/powder-horn-hardware.html

thanx Bull, but he is unable to push the plunger in on those type of items. what track used to carry was a type of ever arrangement.
thanks again

I'll see if Track of the Wolf has a picture and description of that type you're looking for and try to find it.

Here is what I was able to find;

If that wouldn't work, maybe he can grasp this type of valve? http://www.dixiegunworks.com/product_info.php?cPath=22_100_353&products_id=7835

Thank you for your idea for spouts, after looking at them, i actually came up with an idea that will work (I think). After looking at the spring operated spout, i thought why not a powder flask? the rifle will be a .32 caliber caplock of indeterminate era.
thank you very much!

Talking about one of these?

As far as I can tell they are still selling them, they just happen to be out of stock at the moment.

You are welcome and I'd be interested in seeing what you come up with when it's finished.

Bill,

I think The Rifle Shop has that type as well.  You might call them to see if they have the castings in stock.  405-396-2583

The Log Cabin Shop, 330-948-1082, has these, at least they did when I was up there on Oct, finished not as a kit.

Michael Lea also has them as a finished item.
Knowing Michael, his are probably as good if not better than anything else on the market.

I just wanted to post this here...i emailed the Rifle Shoppe in reference to my search for the spout. Mike Melot responded and said they were sending the unit to me free of charge. it was/is a wonderful thing to do.
