Finished rum horn.

One more item done for the Fort Halifax festival.   Sort of a rush job or it would've had more scrimshaw on it. I wanted at least one rum horn to display for the festival. Filled it full with Captain Morgans rum....nary a leak to be found.   It's since been emptied. Don't need a little kiddo taking a swig or two at the event! But anyone who pulls out the stopper and sniffs will know she holds rum!!

Just one stopper? Kind of slows the flow, doesn't it? I really like the sentiments expressed on this one. About how large is it?

Slow flow makes for savoring the ration. Besides, gulping rum isn't prudent, and I wager a lot of others would agree. I've seen both one AND two stopper rum horns....one stopper was easier for me tis all.

Something I have wondered about for a very long time: I surmise that the small section of horn beneath the spout is glued in place.  If that's the case, what type of glue is used?

I don't know about the one that is pictured but I have one very similar and the area below the plug is not attached, it is a raised, and integral, portion of the horn.

The small "squared" piece of horn under the turned ash spout is held onto the main body of the horn with tite bond dark brown glue...used just under the edges of that squared decorative piece. The wooden turned spout is necked down and extends down into the wall of the horn. I just rasped and sanded what little bit of the spout stuck down beyond the inner wall of the horn flush. This way, I figured, lessons the chances of a leak around the spout. Whether this'll work or not remains to be seen, but like I said, I did have it about 3/4's full of rum and layed on its side to see if any rum seeped out around the spout....and it didn't. My thinking is that the liquid swells the wood thus sealing up the connection. But then again...what do I know.
