Stuck peg in powder horn

i bought a horn awhile back and have never used it. Decided to fill it with powder the other day and discovered the peg was stuck FIRMLY in the spout. I have tried several times to pull it out and have not been able to. Its a neat looking peg with an acorn head and I don't want to break it. Any suggestions on how to get it out in one piece? I thought about heating the horn with a heat gun but thought I would check with others to see if anyone has had the same experience.

I'd use a hair dryer. may dry out the plug just enough. Maybe have some tap the spout with the back of a knife,(high frequency vibrations) while you pull up,NO TWISTING!

Drill and put a new pin on the Acorn may be what may happen. Good Luck!

I concur with Pathfinder. No twisting especially if the stopper is made of a softwood. (I know from experience.)

Heating the spout with a hairdryer might work. A heat gun can wreck a horn quickly (I know from experience).

The following comment is meant for others... If there is powder in the horn, NEVER use heat. Dennis, you would not do this, but it would be easy for a newbie to have a lapse of common sense.

That's why I said hair dryer. Down south I was afraid he'd use a heated bar from the forge LOL!

I would think Hair dryer heat with bees wax,NO WATER OR OIL'S!,maybe then the wax will wick and the plug will be schliden hoffen! Learned it from a German upholsterer which I HATE to call him and upholsterer. When he re-covered a leather sofa,first thing we did was find a cow. NO KIDDING! We paid just enough attention at 7,8,9 and 10 years old so we wouldnt get wacked! Good times!

Sure hope i wouldn't but I did get one in the mail with 3F powder in it! i am sure the guy just forgot!

Thanks guys I will use my wife's hairdryer, need to be careful since I burnt one of hers up a few years ago using it to blush aqua fortis ;D Will do this tomorrow afternoon when she will be out for a couple hours ;) ;)

If its swelled from humidity, and the hair drier doesn't work, couldn't you stick it in the refrigerator for a few days? The fridge is a big dehumidifier...

If its wax or something used to finish the stopper that has hardened and glued the stopper in, the hair dried should work...

Wrap some aluminum foil around the protruding part of the peg as a heat sink. That might keep the wooden peg from swelling and tightening things further. Seems to me you need to expand the horn without expanding the plug along with it.

A couple of days ago I dribbled a little Ballistol around the peg so as to let it run down around the mouth of the horn. Close quarters so I used a toothpick. This afternoon I tried a couple of times to pull it out with no luck. Decided to get the hairdryer out but thought I would try one more time and out it came :D. I feel sure it was the Ballistol that did it since it was fairly low humidity when I originally tried to pull it out. About the time I put the Ballistol on it it started to rain and the humidity went up which I was afraid would make the peg even tighter.

Excellent ideas, especially the Ballistol & hairdryer.

A word of caution, you have no idea what is in the horn: maybe nothing, or maybe some black powder, or bugs or ....  Just because it doesn't feel heavy, or just because you can't hear anything when you shake it, it not proof it is empty. Even a few grains exploding could wreck your career as a brain surgeon or concert violinist, or any occupation that requires five functioning fingers on at least one  hand.

Treat the horn as if it contains black powder! Carefull with the hairdryer.
