Where can I get 12 oz denim?
« on: March 25, 2013, 06:03:32 PM »
Picked up some 10 ounce denim at Walmart, washed it and measured with calipers at 0.022+\-. Looking forward to trying this for patching as suggested by some of you fervent cloth measurers (Darl).

My next rifle has a Rice with the deep round bottom rifling so thinking I might want to try some 12 oz.
where might I find some? Walmarts I have checked only had 10 oz.

Joann's should have any kind/weight of denim you want.  I have some of the heavier Walmart denim; mine measured more like 0.025" (which is highly dependent on process), though the person "manning" the counter was lucky to know where denim was and couldn't tell me the "weight".  It shoots pretty well in GM barrels, but I've become suspicious that it is closer to 10 oz. than 12!

Oh yeah, the Walmarts around here are pretty much help yourself or nothing. Only knew it was 10oz because it was printed on the end on the center box. I will find out where the closest Joann's is! Thanks

My Rice round bottom barrel won't allow prb patched with old jeans to be seated. though it measures only a few thousandths more than the ticking I use.  .024" ticking works fine but not the slightly thicker denim.  this has discouraged me from buying any denim.

This demands the question - Have you tried the thick patching with a bit smaller ball? This may be the winning combo for you!

I have bought 8, 10 and 12 oz duck from art supply houses.  It is bulk artists canvas on a roll.  Sold by the yard.  Twelve oz miked about .024 or .025.

make very sure when you by it it is all cotton. my budddy bought some with a little polister in it by accident  they called it stretch denim. though he would never get all the burnt in plastic out of barrel

Art suppliers. Linen canvas. Real linen. I like it.

Art supply linen is pretty pricey stuff - at least around here it is.

For me, it's like figuring the per-shot cost of Swiss powder vs., say, Skirmish powder, never mind Goex. It's VERY small potatoes in what this enterprise takes from my wallet. I figure most of my patches cut from real linen cost me somewhere between one and two cents each, paying today's prices. You can get artists linen that's 88 inches wide, so the cost per yard has to considered against denim that's 36-45" wide. Gas to and from the range is MUCH more spendy.

Here's one source, and it can be had for less. If you ask, most sources will send you a sample to measure.

"Back in the day," cotton was far pricier than linen, and not very available.
