Reminds me of the story of the Lewis and Clark expeditions cut down rifle, that they traded to one of their indian guides. They were quite surprised at the accuracy, from such a short barrel. Although they never really mention how short it was.

I think it's legal anywhere.  ATF doesn't consider it to be a firearm do they?
Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law' because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.

What are California's regulations if any on muzzle loaders. The BATFE doesn't look at muzzleloaders
as far as is known.

In California, muzzleloaders and cap and ball revolvers etc are not firearms UNLESS you are talking about consealed carry... Then they fall into the firearm category. I think the 18" barrel on a shotgun law might also effect muzzleloading smoothbores, but there seems to be some wiggle room because smoothbore perc and flintlock pistols are legal in CA.

I believe that to be quite shorter than the infamous 'canoe gun', therefore I dub thee the 'kayak rifle'  ;)

All of my muzzleloaders will shoot into one ragged hole ALL DAY LONG ... it's just the 2nd or 3rd & other shots that tend to open up my groups ... !

In Michigan that would be considered a pistol and would need to be registered as such as the total length is under 30 inches.

In Canada a handgun must be "designed to be fired by the action of one hand".  This one is obviously not.
