Dome Head lock bolts
« on: April 18, 2013, 04:05:49 PM »
Does anyone you have a source for the nice dome head lock bolts that I see lots of builders using.  I have access to lots of flat head lock bolts, but have been unable to fine a source for the nice dome headed ones.  I know that some builders make their own, but I would like to find a source in order that I don't have to make them.  Thanks.

I chuck the flat heads up in my cordless drill and work them down with my belt sander. I guess a disk sander or even a file would also work.

Hawken
All of the commercial ones I found had pretty low domes compared to the originals that I was looking to copy. The other problem I found was I like to use both a 10-32 and a 8-32 bolt on my locks and the heads on the commercial bolts varied greatly between shank sizes.Keeps them from getting switched and provides a little more clearence for the RR.Long story short I make my own.

I'm with Nate, I make mine on my "Okie lathe" ( drill, and a file), and even have made some with domes, and flanges. Pretty easy stuff. Even I can do it. actually mine is an "Arkie lathe" since my kin are from Arkansas.

I buy the biggest ones Track sells.  Beleive they call them trade gun lock bolts.  They are nice quality and usually the heads are big enough for any job.  When I need something bigger, I just make them.  If you don't have a good lathe, an oversize carriage bolt is a good starting point.

For all my gun building years I have bought the flat ones and chucked them in the drill press and worked them round with a file and then cleaned up with emory cloth. Simple.

I buy the "dome" headed lock bolts from TOW....#8-32 for the rear and #6-32 for the front.  Also have bought their unthreaded  "blanks". Awhile back,  switched to an #8-32 for the tang bolt....screws are "powerful"  fasteners and are many times "over sized".....Fred

Thanks to all who answered.  When I tried to "Google" them, I couldn't find any, so I am glad that there are a few sources.  Also, I might just crank up my "redneck" lathe and try my hand at making them.  Thanks again.
