well i did it..!!
broke the tip off a iron wood screw in the heel of the butt plate,
its about 1/8 im guessing,
its in a very hard piece of red curley maple,,,,
was going to drill a bigger hole until i got to the broken part.
then grab it with needle nose vise grips..and hope to back it out,,
then plug the hole and redrill....any other ideas?
i even waxed the screw and used a gimlet.. and it still broke off..!!
dont have a shorter same size screw,, as its already counter sunk in the brass

Maybe a tiny burr mounted to a dremel would be able to grind it out. Then  drill and plug the screw hole

The easiest way I know to remove the screw is with a screw extractor, which may be purchased at McFeely's. It's basically a 3/8" outside diameter hole saw, which is run in reverse, around the outside of the broken screw shank. When the cutter reaches the bottom of the broken screw, everything breaks loose. Then install a 3/8" plug, and you're good to go. Makes a very neat, strong, repair. Ask me how I know!

Drill a series of three hole with real small drill along side of broken screwshank and it will relive some of the tension from the screw shank but once out I would plug it with a small section of hickory ramrod glued in and then use a pilot hole next time.

I make a mini hole saw by cutting teeth with a 3 cornered file in a piece of metal tubing a little bigger than the screw.Center it over the screw, cut to the depth of the screw ,pop  out the plug and fill hole with a dowel.You end up with a nice clean hole that is esily plugged.I've used aluminum arrows and a broken radio antenna to make my mini hole saws.
