Black Powder
« on: May 02, 2013, 02:35:08 PM »
Anyone know where I can buy black powder in South West Va or Eastern Tennessee.
I need some FFG and FFFG.

I remember yrs ago I could walk into about any gun shop or hardware store and pick it up off the shelf.  How times have changed.

The regulations/paperwork for a retailer to carry black powder are so onerous that even most gun shops that stock smokeless powder don't carry black powder.  If you have a gun shop that sells traditional arms near you, they might carry it.  I have one shop in my area that does, and they complain about the extra work stocking the stuff every time I visit.

You might have to buy from one of the suppliers on the interweb.  To be cost effective you probably have to buy more than you want, but it doesn't go bad. Some sell smaller lots at a slightly higher cost per pound.

This is probably stuff you already know.

Yes I already know about how hard it is to get due to the regulations on it.

I am hoping someone within driving distance may have some extra they do not need or know of a shop that sells it.

Thanks for your reply.

It might be best to just order a mixed case and be done with it for awhile.

I second the notion motion.      Buddy up with another shooter/shooters and spring for a case.  Powder Inc.  $15. a lb to your door Fed Ex.

I don't need that much powder.  Maybe some one will have some extra that lives within driving distance.

See if you can find a ML club in the area that may have ordered in bulk for club members.

To be strictly legal (and these days, 'legal' is a pretty good thing to strictly be) an individual can't  sell black powder without some Federal explosive dealer's license.  Splitting an order as suggested by Roger F should be okay.   If you have a place to store it, a 25lb case costs $365 from Jack's Powder Keg, delivered, and will keep you shooting for a long time.

A few years ago, I found some .440RB for sale in a shop in Pennington Gap, which indicates they may carry more than the usual fodder that inline ML shooters use.  If I can remember the name of the shop I'll post it.    And, have you tried the BassPro there near Pigeon Forge?

Good luck.   SCL

The Bass Pro shop is 150 miles from me but next time I am down that way I will stop in.
I haven't been to Mahoneys in Johnson City in a long time so may give them a call and see if they have any.

If you remember the shop in Pennington Gap I can ride over there in about an hour.

Called the Bass Pro in Seiverville and they do have FF in stock.   I will be going that way in couple weeks so will pick some up.

Thanks everyone for all the replys.

The shop in Pennington Gap was Liberty Sport and Pawn, right next to the Baptist Church on E. Morgan Ave.  It's a bit   of a longshot, but worth a phonecall to see if they keep any 'real' powder in stock.

Kik is $170.00 for 10lbs from Powderinc. $17.00 a pound ain't bad an I think it's better than Goex. No need to order a case to get a good deal.

Call Bob Parker  before you plan to go there, as his  hours are somewhat variable.  If he knows you are comming, he will try to be there.
