Nice curly ash
« on: January 07, 2009, 02:37:45 AM »
Guys,

I am in the market for a nice blank of curly ash.  But not just any blank of curly ash, no Sir...

The thing is, it needs to be long, really long.  Like 70" long.  :o
The rifle will be one of Dennis Glazeners North Carolina Gillespies with a .46 caliber 50" Bobby Hoyt barrel.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Ez

Freddie Harrison usually has a good supply of curly ash. Don't know if you have worked with it before, it costs a fair amount more than maple with comparable figure.

I got a spare piece that is 69 3/4" long, but probably a lot wider than you need for that type of rifle. e mail me if you are interested

You might try Ed Price as well. I bought a really curly piece at the CLA show from him. It was the most consistantly striped piece of ash I ever saw, & I just couldn't leave without it.   I am going to have to quit going to these ML events, I buy too much wood.  It is either quit going or build another building to store it in. Build the building seems like the logical thing to do, right ?   :o  ;D

How would one get in contact with Mr. Price?

Fred Miller had some ash a few weeks ago.  One piece was real curly, the rest were so-so to plain. I don't know how long the curly one was.  I bought a super piece from Wayne last November to use with a 46" barrel. It's long enough for a 49".  He may have longer.

I got mine from Wayne Dunlop (Enough for a 46" barrel). I know he cuts for Chambers wood and the smoothbore has a 46" barrel so he may have the length. He brings some nice stuff to Dixons as well. I second Freddy Harrison though if you are going for super curl.

Call Freddie,
I was going through his woodpile a few weeks before X-mas and seem to recall a couple of super curly ash stocks that were about 5-6 ft long.
