Many old horns have embellishment that seems to be engraved, not scratched into the surface. I have tired using some of my engraving tools for this, but it often leaves a cut that is a little ragged, especially across the grain. I tried heating the horn a little bit, and that seemed to help some, but it cools too quickly to really make much difference.
What am I missing here? Is there a specific technique to give a smoother cut ?
