Could someone explain the difference between a "Documentary copy" and a "Bench copy?"

A bench copy is when you have the original rifle that is to be copied  laying on your bench through the building process as a pattern  .. To me documentary copy means using photos or drawing of what is to be built as your source of information..   But personally I had never used the term documentary..

Mr. Parker, do you think copies all the photos taken during the build would ever be available together?  It would be a great look at the  process in detail.  I think I could find room in my budget if I had the opportunity to purchase such a collection.  I especially liked how the spokeshave almost disappeared in that roughing-out pic.  That, and the pile of shavings around the bench, gives one a true appreciation for the actual 'effort' that goes into these things!  Very well done.

Thank you Louie. The Sheetz copy those gentlemen produced is outstanding.

The Sheetz rifle is a bench copy. Documentary comes from the whole building process was documented by photographs. We photographed every aspect of this build. A good number of the 1000+ photo's are shown on the CLA auction site. Darrin and I have talked about putting a book together on the build for the winner of the auction. If there is enough interest we would be willing to put this in book form to sell.

Well thank you guys, I and Jim really appreciate the kind words. I do have all the photos of this and like jim said ( it was Jims idea) to compile them in a book and/or maybe CD form may be a good idea. I didnt even think others may be interested in seeing the whole set of photos.

I agree with Dave, awesome rifle.

After reading whats available I would buy a book or CD with the details/pics of the build.

CD's are the way to go.....much cheaper to produce and you don't need a publisher, saving even more cost.  I find 'em particularly handy because you can zoom in on the photos to see details. ;)

The ones available from the KRA are a good example of this.  Enjoy, J.D.

The CLA has asked me to publish articles on the auction items  for 2013 as I did in previous years.  The link below is to the Sheets Rifle article.  This year I  was asked to link back to CLA for the additional photos.

http://www.blackpowdermag.com/cla-articles/cla-auction-2013-the-john-jacob-sheetz-rifle-project.php

Below the Sheets rifle article are the other 6 items made available to me so far. Among those is an article on Crosby and Albert's pouch and horn set.

Check back. I'll post an article on each of the CLA auction items.
