A Lancaster
« on: June 07, 2013, 09:23:51 PM »
Finished this LR 4 mos ago and seeing it's my 2nd last Mler, just thought I'd post it.
It's got a Rice .50 cal.  "B" weightX 44" bbl and a Chambers Dale Johson lock.  The John Brooks style Pbox was made by me....have a hard time avoiding the "Daisy Head". The exquisite engraving is by Tim Adlam and overwhelms my effort. All comments are welcome. The blank was from Dunlaps....Fred

Outstanding!   Great looking rifle. Did you use aquafortis for stain?

Fantastic carving.  love theC-scroll proportion.  Looks like the wood to metal around the PB is impeccable.  Great job!

Good afternoon Sir; OUTSTANDING. The wood carving on the cheek, left side, has now become my all time favorite pattern of all time. Thanks for sharing. AJ.

A very lovely rifle Fred.  It has carving that could well be considered a signature of yours, in its style and execution.  Is it stained with AF?  What ever you used, you nailed the colour perfectly.

Very nice Fred. Your big bold carving has sort of a J P Beck look to me.

Thanks for the kind words. The staining is a combination of Dangler's Orange Toner and then Dangler's Reddish Brown...both from Jim Klein. The low sheen finish is a combination of LMF Sealer followed by Wahkon Bay Trucoat. . Bought 3 blanks from Dunlaps and after talking w/ Wayne, went w/ lower grades {he talked me into it}
and am quite satisfied w/ what he sent me, sight unseen.  The LR from the first blank was sold and this LR has the second blank and the third I'm trying to turn into a Bucks County....my last MLer.....Fred

Nice gun Freddy, pretty good for an old guy.    I was going to give you a critique on it, but I kept looking, and looking, and
looking.  I really like the color and finish, two areas that I have trouble with..........Don

Don...you're right in that I'm an "old guy"....81 years old. The Bucks County  presently being worked at a very leisurely pace is my last. The macular degeneration in both eyes is giving me "fits"...straight lines are no longer straight and the patience that has always served me so well is waning. I should take up farming, but don't have a farm. Really don't have any complaints at all.

I can just imagine what the original builders went through w/o good lighting and optical aids. .... very understandable why many quit gun buildinbg so early in their  careers.

Thanks to all for your kind words.....Fred

Absolutely stunning, as your work always is. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing the last one... and saddened that it will be your last at the same time.

As always, you have done a great job Fred!!!! One thing, I think your flower looks more like a stylized Edelweiss than a Daisey. ;)

Robby...Thanks for the compliment and you're correct that it's not a daisy which I'm not particularly fond of and try to avoid.  Could be an edelweiss but really don't know what John Brooks intended although "my version" is slightly different than  his . Not a common type of Pbox finial in Lancaster...more popular is some  other areas.....Fred

Hi Fred
Sorry to hear about you eyesight and that you will be only building one more rifle. Your carving style is very distinctive and I have admired it for some time now. You are a quality craftsman sir and I will miss seeing your work. Thanks for sharing your work.

I really like your idea on the carving!  Instead of the volutes, which seem to me so often over used to create a larger balancing object in the carving, the large fiddle heads are a great alternative.  Nicely done.

Could you add a photo of the tang carving?  Would love to see your ideas there.

Thank you for the tang photo.  Your carving is a unique interpretation of Rococo which would be as individually recognizable as the old masters.  It has the power of form Beck put into some of his bolder work and has stayed consistent with colonial art forms.  Nicely balanced, not fussy and showing graceful strength.
