Charles Burton barrels: user comments

Burton barrels are advertised as having a .003" straight tapered bore. Are they noticeably easier to load? Can you tell any difference in accuracy?
Sounds intriguing.

If the muzzle is correctly crowned,a taper or choke is a real advantage.
I once owned an Alex Henry/Whitworth .451 for a 500 grain bullet and it
had a pronounced choke that was noticeable from the muzzle + 8" and it
sure did work. It had a keen "crack" when it fired, much like a smokeless
powder rifle.

I'm not sure about the .003 taper but the .54 i have from him shoots as good as any other barrel I ever used.  I have one of his 16 ga. fowler barrels I sent out to get jugged choked.  The "choker" told me it was the most concentric barrel he ever worked on.  This barrel has not been shot yet.

Charles made a 16 bore for me, haven't finished the fowler yet but I did center it up in the lathe to "bell" the muzzle (Richards/English style) and the bore ran perfectly true no "wobble" in it and the bore ran true with the outside. Looking forward to shooting it.

If these barrels are tapered with the breech being 0.003 inch diameter larger than the muzzle, then they are just like originals which had a similar taper.  In using an armory reamer from the breech end, the tool gives such a taper.  Really, in using 18th c type tools it is difficult to get a barrel without such a small taper.  Check out the longer discussion on this thread.

Once the ball/patch is down about an inch or so,it will be noticebly
easier and with the correct powder charge,it should have more of a
"Crack" sound when it goes off.
