If it had Leman or Tryon or Henry on it, that would place it in another  price range.  I'd pick it up if the price was good, especially if larger bore.

Any longrifle in this condition ( or any reasonable condition) is worth preserving, appreciating, studying and owning at a reasonable price. This looks reasonable. Any Kopps yet?

Thanks.

Our family now has 5 Kopps. My family has 3 Andrews and one George now, and I have the Andrew I posted about in the past that was a restock. I got it back from Mark Wheland in the spring and as expected he did a superb job on the stock and lock repairs.

What caliber ?

Owner is not sure but thinks its 36 or 38 caliber, 35 inch barrel.

I don't think I've ever seen a screw plate that big or with that many screws.

Looks to be an old repair.  You can see what looks like a crack between the plate and the tang and a few nails(?) going down through the wood to help secure it.

$250 seems like a bargain to me.  Looks like a St. Lous style.

I'm going to keep saving my pennies and keep looking for another Kopp rifle.

If anyone is interested in this one, the direct link is http://classifieds.pennswoods.net/classifieds/viewad.cgi?adindex=2354846

I don't know the seller or anything further about this gun beyond my brief text message exchange with him, which I've related in this thread.

Thanks for everyone's input.

By the way, antique rifles do turn up on the blackpowder category on the Pennswoods.com classified site occasionally. Here's the link:

Went to the above link and scrolled down the list of black powder guns for sale.  lo and behold there is a Sothgate rifle for sale.
I recall in the past week or so that some ALR member was looking for (WTB) a Southgate rifle or pistol in the classified forum..
