building TRS Locks question

I have several sets of lock kits from TRS and have been curious as to what screws are best for the internals. I know some use the same screws that Chambers uses for his lock internals but what size and thread pitch is he using?

I don't know what Jim uses, but a fine thread will be more vibration resistant than a coarse.

I'd use 6-40, 8-32, 10-32, as they are standard thread, and readily available.

Are you going to make your own screws?

If not, make sure you can get the right configuration in 6-40.

  You would most likely want more than the "standard" 75% thread engagement.  You probably already have the necessary reamers to achieve the proper tolerances in the tumbler/bridal holes, as well as frizzen holes.   Many locks built  these days are supplied with holes as much as .012" over.  Way too large for my liking.

TRS Locks can be a lot of fun to build - and complete pain in the butt.  I've used 6-40 and 8-32 depending on the lock size.  Having a couple 5-40 and 4-40 taps can be helpful for real small parts.  One thing I've found most helpful is the use of jeweler's "dopping wax".  It's a super dense waxy material that you melt onto two parts to hold them together while you drill.  It hardens like epoxy, then when you're done you melt it off and clean the remainder with alcohol.  http://www.ctmuzzleloaders.com/ctml_experiments/mantonlock/mantonlock.html  did an excellent tutorial years back on assembling a Manton lock by TRS.  I used some of his tips and tricks for assembling mine.  I'll swing by one of these days with some of my locks and we can chat!  Good luck,

Eric, thanks for the tip on the Dropping wax. What a great Idea.  I have the lock for the Moses Brent pistol that I think the 5-40 would be a good choice

YOu are right TOF, I guess I better find those reading glasses. There is too much fuzzyness with out them these days.
