If you recall I showed two antique powder horns that required some attention. As a result I finally made a new butt plug for the first horn I showed in 'A tale of two horns',
http://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=26669.0 Wood pegs, small brads and a tack were used for installation and I luckily managed to install and 'age' the butt plug without disturbing the existing patina on the horn.
Upon completing that repair I had to make a pouch that seemed appropriate for both the horn style along with its' acquired patina. I started out with an idea brought upon reading Jim Webb's book, "Sketches of Hunting Pouches, Powder Horns and Accouterments of Southern Appalachia". Although this pouch started out simple enough until I accidently spilled some 'vinegaroon' on the front. Oh well, at least it looks grummy enough for this 'new' powder horn.
This is basically one piece of veg tan 2-3 oz leather, sewn up using hemp and there is even a small inside hanging pocket for whatever. Dimensions are about 7 1/2 wide by 7 high. I added a button to the top and using a leather piece attached to the back then flipped over to close using the button. After braiding some hemp cord for the strap it was then just a manner for using some more hemp cord to attach the powder horn to the strap. Voila. A small simple hunting pouch for that first days' hunt for those rascally tree rats.
