Douglas XXX Barrel- What's the Value?
« on: August 05, 2013, 07:23:14 PM »
I'm looking to buy a gun with an 1 1/2'' .45cal Douglas XXX Barrel. Its a heavy bench gun and I'm just wondering if the price is right on it? The barrel is in absolute mint condition. Were many XXX barrels made, I have only heard of XX?

Thanks,
MM119

It was good to meet you at the Coon Ranch over the weekend. To me the barrel is sort of an odd duck. Yes, it's an old Douglas & there are people who would want it for that reason. But it's a .45. IMHO it would be tough to compete with it on the bench these days against .54s & up. It would also have a problelm in the chunk game being shorter & the shorter sight radius that comes with it. Where it would shine is shooting the 30yd board matches where weight is not an issue.

Well, you know how fast you get to $500 when you start buying parts. Lock, barrel, stock & triggers would put it over the top these days. Just depends on what you hope to use it for. I'm just not convinced that it would compete with what's on the benches these days.

I'll try to make both! What are the rules for a turkey shoot?

Same format as the other day except first place for each X is a turkey. 2 turkeys & you're out. Actually you would win 2nd place for that X but not the bird. Some of the matches give a bird for the shortest string also.

There's also a couple of turkey shoots on Nov. 2nd & 3rd at Prichard WV & Louisa KY

I worked at the GR Douglas company for a few years and made and stamped my share of the ML barrels. If there is anything stamped on one of their barrels other than GR Douglas and an oval with XX inside of it, it's not a factory stamped barrel. Douglas barrels were among the best that were ever made and you can never go wrong in purchasing one.   Kind Regards   Frank

Frank,

What kind of barrel is mine? It has GR Douglas with 3 "Roman Numeral Style" Xs stamped on it.

That is a Douglas mark for a Premium barrel. The price will be what a willing seller
will get from a willing buyer.

That is a fraud stamping. The factory stamp for a premium grade barrel was XX set in an oval. Your barrel was a standard grade and someone outside the GRD shop has turned it into something it is not. It would have been a little more authentic if they would have stopped with just two X's. About the only difference in a premium barrel and a standard barrel is maybe a little run out in the drilling.
