Picked up a .50 cal flinter with a set trigger. It is set to light. What direction do you turn the set screw on the bottom to make a heavier set trigger pull?

Counter clockwise, you want to loosen it not tighten it.

It's a good idea to disassemble a new/used rifle when ya get it,
That way you can check for any possible damaged parts, clean old dried oil and re-oil moving parts
and see first hand how things work.
