Most anything I've ever seen that was over 125 years old and meant to be durable was normally made well, even if simple made. We want things to look rustic, they wanted things to looks as civilized as possible.

seriously, consider oil painting and sculpture before the modern era...I think they had a pretty good handle on finely made things well before the 20th century
if anything I wonder if its our time period that lacks in prevalent quality hand made goods

Plus there was a clear unbroken trail of how things ought to be made...and what  "professionally well done in a workman like manner" really meant...today we must often reinvent that wheel since those links have long been broken....or try to justify our improvisations.
