Latest Fowler...
« on: August 25, 2013, 03:33:17 AM »
Hi everyone...  I just finished this fowler and thought I'd share a few photos.  The stock is based on a Twigg patern, but it's stocked in American walnut.  I was going for something that a Colonist of some means might have owned, such as a Virginia Planter.  The wire inlay is of a fairly simple pattern, not nearly as ornate as a European piece, but along the same lines.  Obviously, it has strong English influence.

Anyway, the butt piece is from Dunlaps, I can't remember where I picked up the trigger guard, everything else I made.  The lock is by Allan.  All inlay work was done with sterling silver.  The barrel is a smooth bore, .62 cal Colerain.

After scraping and sanding, the grain was filled with Herter's, then had three coats of Chamber's oil applied.  The finish was then rubbed back with paraffin oil and rotton stone.

Any questions, critiques, etc. are more than welcome.

    Ed

Love it, very sleek and stylish.  Now I have to ask a wise question: did you use a Philips screwdriver to punch the diamond design in the checkerboard?   ;D

Boy-boy do I like your gun. As has already been said, very sleek and sexy. If it were a woman I would say she is quite a looker. Every thing is great and I love the engraving patterns and execution.

Nice gun Ed, I like it. You have been studying Schipper's engraving work. I wish I could show you how to do a historically correct nick and dot border....maybe I should figure out how to do a movie tutorial some time. I think I would have went with all brass dots in the checkering, just a personal preference. Your tang carving is really good. Nice slim and sexy gun as they should be. Thumbs up from me!

She looks very slim. How much does she weigh? Fantastic work, though she almost looks to beautiful to shoot.

Holy mackerel! (as my dad used to say)

You've out-done yourself Ed. I love the whole thing. Super slim. I suspect you did the border that way for a reason. I've seen more traditional borders on your other stuff, so is this a tribute to a certain gun or style?

Way nice. The only down  side is that it is going to make the "Twigg" rifle I am working on look like a dog once it is done, compared to yours.   :(   ;D

Mike, while I see your point about filling in all the dots on the wrist, I would have to see the gun in person before I made that call.

I would also like to see a real traditional nick and dot being performed. Mike, you coming to Dixon's next year? We'll have a spot for you in the ALR tent.  :D

OMG, that is such a bad idea.  ;D

Thanks, everyone for the input.  The border engraving was cut in the "traditional" manner but the spacing between nicks is a little long, and I didn't drag the heel, so it looks more like the nicks were just cut in.  Also didn't add any "dots", and the cuts themselves could maybe be a little more aggressive.  I could lie and say there's a particular reason for that, but there's really not, lol.  Some of the design work is Schipper's influenced, some is more traditional English influenced.  I happen to really like John Schipper's style, so it has influenced me.  Some may like that, others might not.  Anyway, I was trying to sort of blend some things.  One thing I'm personally not big into is the hog's head with bow's and arrows stuff.  I know it's more "traditional", but I just like scrolly things better.  Anyway, I do appreciate the input.

I have no idea what the piece weighs, although it's pretty light, and no Rich, I didn't use a Phillips head screw driver, lol.  Although it was very close, a stamping tool thing I had lying around, and 10lb. sledge!

Ed,
Great looking fowler with top notch workmanship. The only thing I see to complain about is that it should be a 16 bore instead of a 20. Having owned both there is just no comparison.
