When to install touch hole liner??
« on: August 26, 2013, 09:21:20 AM »
I am at the point of my build where I need to breech my barrel and inlet the tang. I was going to install my white lightning liner before installing the breech plug. My thoughts were to remove any burrs in the bore created from the liner installation before I install the plug. And once the plug is in I don't plan to take it back out again.

Now taking this route I realize I will have to be careful inletting the lock correctly in location to the touch hole.

Any suggestions are appreciated!!

I always install the TH last. Plan where it is going to be but don't install it till the barrel and lock are in the correct orientation. Most time it will be exactly right but only a little miss will affect the looks. Why add more stress than you need. You can always unbreech the barrel after or before you install the Liner. As long as you line up your witness marks on the barrel when you replace the breech everything will go back in.

Melsdad...........Mike has it right, installing the touchhole liner is one of the last things you would do, but, you must still plan
for it's location on the barrel.   I would measure the depth of your breech plug plus 1/2 of the diameter of the liner that you
are going to use.  Inlet the lock so that mark will fall in the middle of the pan..............Don

Agreed on the above two inputs.

I lightly centerpunch where the TH will be, and inlet the lock referencing that location. If the lock has drifted a little while inletting, no big deal, you haven't drilled the hole yet!

Lately I've been coning the inside of the touchhole with Tom Snyder's Touch hole burrs. Then you don't see the bright liner on the side of the barrel. A liner can be installed at a later date if ever someone wears out the touch hole.

I always prick punch the location as soon as I get the lock & barrel mounted but I don't drill it until after everything else is done.

Here's another vote for installing the liner LAST. Prick punch your ideal location first and try to inlet your lock to that mark, as already stated.
