removing high gloss on horn
« on: August 27, 2013, 02:09:41 PM »
I recently bought a cow horn from a store in AZ.  It has a very high gloss finish and i would prefer a more satin finish.
Anyone have any good tips on how to remove the gloss?
I have tried 0000 steel wool and even 220 grit sandpaper and it has had a small impact but not as much as I would like.  Maybe need more elbow grease?

Are you going to make a powder horn out of it? If so while working it with rasps, files, scraper, etc... you will take the gloss off. In any case since it is already polished the scraper will easily take it off the gloss.

I suspect it has been varnished with something. If it was just polished the 4/0 should tone it down.

You might try a little coarser grit of sandpaper and then gradually sand with finer grits until you get the sheen you want.

Use some 180 or 220 wet or dry with water for lube. Its likely got some form of varnish on it and the water will help prevent its plugging the paper.
220 should dull a horn in a few passes otherwise.
