Go to    collectorsfirearms.com   . Then Click Antique Long Guns, scroll down until you see Virginia Kentucky Rifle , or search their site for AL3394.

I kind of like the rope or vine carving around the cheek piece.

Does anyone else think this is a "composite" gun? PAtchbox side panels seem to overlap butt plate, strange trigger guard. No explanation for wood color change in pierced finial....?

Guard is probably a backwoods repair made during the working life of the gun.  Good architecture contrasts with that guard.  Somebody buffed the wood in the finial?

Fred,

You suspicious old devil! ;)

If it were just one thing I could live with it. But when all is combined I begin to have problems. If you step back and look at the general "flow" of this piece I'd say that it somehow misses the mark. Trigger guard and trigger group are an outstanding example here.

Methinks I'll pass on this bargain.

Someone hacked that together out of parts.  Maybe a long time ago but it's still a parts gun, looks like to me.  Not just the wood in the finial but most of the engraving was removed off the forward portion of the finial itself, probably when being tacked onto the gun.  Kind of a cool clunky stock though.

The barrel to stock fit kind of has a bit of a "droop" going as you view along it's length. Appears a couple of the barrel tenons may have slipped away from the bottom flat.  I really like how the description mentions this to be a good starter piece for a new collector.  At their asking price I would expect a whole lot more!

That cheek piece looks very south German to me with its round end.

I was thinking it was an old restock.

My $.02 worth is that the rifle, if not the lock. was originally percussion.
