Extended length cleaning jag
« on: September 01, 2013, 10:42:55 PM »
I'm looking for a source for an extended length cleaning jag that's for a .40 caliber rifle.  The Log Cabin Shop has 3 inch ones (just what I need) in .45, .50, and .54, but not in .40.  I've not yet found one for .40 caliber on-line but surely someone carries them.  Does anybody know of a source for them?  Thanks.

Get the 45 and spend a few minutes with a lathe (if you have one) or turn it in a drill press or hand held drill chuck and work it down with a bastard file. Quickly turn it to exact size you need.

Yes, Dennis, I think that's what I may have to do.  I have a friend that's got a new lath and he loves to play with it.  He made a jig for me recently for drilling places like the tang to the trigger plate.  I found the instructions for it here on the ALR forum.  It works like a champ.

Just as Dennis said...the easy way:  Put your drill in a vise to keep it steady, put the Jag in the drill clamp, turn the drill on and use the file to grind it down.  Should take less than a few minutes of time.  Then polish the Jag on a polishing wheel, or keep it somewhat rough to grab the cleaning patch.  If you want to deepen the grooves while in the drill, use a smaller file inside the grooves.  Done this many times.

Yes, I've done this myself in the past but I prefer to use a drill press rather than clamping a hand drill.  But since I have to buy the extended length anyway, I was trying to get one the right size in the first place.  It appears that in the end I'll have to reduce a .45 to a .40 since I've had no luck finding an extended cleaning jag for a .40 caliber rifle.

I ordered the .45 caliber extended length cleaning jag from the Log Cabin Shop with the intention of reducing the jag to .40 caliber by putting it in a small drill press and using a file.  It arrived and I discovered that it's actually just a 3 inch long piece of 3/8 inch diameter brass rod with a male 10-32 stud on one end and the other end is bored and tapped to 10/32 with a .45 caliber jag screwed into it.  You can change it to any caliber from .40 caliber and up just by screwing in the proper jag.  No filing or fitting required.  I guess it's true, "Every hog finds an acorn sometimes".   :D

I think Anson and Judy Morgan at Kenockee Trading Post in Michigan, will have what you need.

Thanks, Tom, but what I got from Log Cabin Shop is exactly what I needed.  In fact since you can change calibers from .40 on up, it's even better than what I needed.
