I use a pottery kiln, it is a small one about a foot square inside I went to a pottery store and you can get a temp outfit that will slump at certain temperatures and I marked on the dial the temps I need according to the slump sticks ,I cannot recall what they are called, but it got me close enough for knife tempering.
