Powder Horn Dated 1854

Along with those three roundball scissor molds as part of my "grab bag" purchase was this nice old powder horn. It is crudely dated 1854 and has a past owners initials A B scratched onto it's surface. The horn is very translucent and was about half full of powder when I got it. Truly a working mans horn, but a date always adds to the interest!

Nice old horn. Would you post a pic of the butt, maybe straight on or at an angle so we can see the finial better? It looks as though it is a plug but I see no way for the strap to attach. Nice find.

Joel,
Very cool horn -- and the date is an added bonus. The carved tip is elegant in its simplicity. Another great find, Joel.

Tim, the base plug has a round depression in the wood that is very shallow and centered in the middle is a brass shaped "drum" with a hole going through it for a strap string. There is a small piece of some kind of very thin fabric like a ribbon stuck beneath this drum.

Might the ribbon be adding friction to keep the plug stuck into the butt?
