Roger Sells on blog
« on: September 27, 2013, 03:10:30 AM »
Roger Sells posted a rifle on the contemporary makers blog.  Really great iron mounted rifle.  The only thing I see wrong with it is the top of the barrel say "R Sells" instead of "R Sells for H Ahlers"

kind regards, heinz

It's a really, really nice rifle. I like everything about it, too. Very handsomely done.

Thanks for the kind words.  This rifle has been in the making for a long time, and Bruce (the owner) and I are going to get together in a couple weeks to chew the fat and shoot a bit.  I have learned a lot during the process of building this one.  I still need to finish one job to have it complete.  I have made a few rifles a bit fancier, but this one has grown on me and it is my favorite.  The bummer is that it isn't mine, but it has a good home.

Please someone post an explanation of a captured box lid?  ???  No hinge?? Does it just fall out when you push the release? No criticism here just curiosity, my source of sleepless nights.  :-[   BTW I think Mr. rsells is beginin to get the hang of this riflegun buildin!  ;D

Sweed,
The "captured lid" means that the patchbox is made from one piece of metal with an opening cut into it for the lid.  The lid is totally surrounded by one piece of metal.  The "hidden hinge" means that the lid is not attached with a hinge that is visible from the outside.  The hinge is a different design that is attached to the underside of the lid and the underside of the patch box final.  When the patch box release button is pushed, the lid opens as normal, but the pivit points are located inside the patch box cavity.  Hope this will be of help.

My bet this lid hinge has tabs on the surround and door up front towards the finial and a hinge pin through it....reason I say that is I just built on for my current rifle .  I saw some originals that Wallace had at the armsmakers workshop 2 years back. my release is different although this one is just like the one Wallace had shown us. I'll post a pic of it tonight

Hey Guys,
here are the pics of the box lid I just made. on the last pic you might be able to see the spring catch that lid post locks into.  the spring is actuated by a slide bare attached to the silver button. it did it this way instead of using just a spring catch as Mr Sells as my box has a slightly domed lid at the back...you can see that on picture 2 where it is open. You can also see the hinge set up in this one.  Hope the pics show up!! Never posted any before!

John,
You need to put the photos on a website, many use photobucket or something similiar. Once on the website you put them in the post just the way you have them now but with the FULL URL which should look similiar to this :

Thanks rsells for the reply. Although I'm still partially in the dark,  :-\ that helped. Sort of like the concealed European cabinet hinges so popular today! If you have some detail pics of the hinge arrangement I'd love to see them.  ;D  There has to be some sort of offset of the pivot so the lid lifts, and don't bind, right?? Or does the end of the lid dive down into the box itself? Don't look like there is enough room for that in the pic. ?

Thanks sawatis for taking the trouble to post those pics. That also helped!

Please excuse my ignorance on this, but that's why God invented the ? ? ? ? right?   ;D

Sweed,
The short end of the lid (end towards the front) dips down into the box when opened.  The end of the lid on the front has a bevel going from the top of the lid to a point on the most forward part of the lid at the bottom that matches the surface above it  when closed, and a bevel in the opposite direction on the back part of the lid.  Not sure it is easy to follow.  I will take some photo's of the arrangement when Bruce and I shoot again.

O K !!!!  :o The light comes on! Kinda like them o l d florescence, just a little slow. That explains the lack of any cracks showing front and back.  What thickness material used for this. Since I'm heavy handed and tend to break things, seems this might be made substantial enough to survive the sweed!  ;D Thanks Roger!

I think I used 1/16 inch material for the thimbles, toe plate, and patch box.

Hey Roger,
the hinge bar runs through ears that are dovetailed and soldered into the lid and surround about 1/2 inch in from the finial end...just about where the first screw on the right side of the surround is.  The lid pivots into the box opening...I increased the depth of the box at that end to accommodate that and the edge where the lid and surround meet (where the rope border on the finial is) are alternate bevels to leave no gap.  The hinge bar is angled to allow the box to open perpendicular to the stock due to the complex curves in the area and  eliminate binding.
Fun one to make...alignment is challenging..but it works greta.
