I got the Gunsmith's Manual
« on: September 27, 2013, 03:25:02 AM »
I got my copy of The Gunsmith's Manual by Stelle and Harrison today.   This thing is a wonder.   I wish I had had this 30 years ago.    I now see where a lot of stuff they do in the CW gunshop came from.    This thing very concisely tells you what you need to know.   The parts on forging and welding iron and steel tell you everything you need to know, stuff it took me years to glean from various sources.     The one tool I wish I had known about a long time ago is the square drift for cutting square holes in cocks/hammers.   I have spent more time than I care to remember filing those stupid holes only to screw something up at the end.   This is a great little book that every traditional gunsmith should have in their shop, and it cost less than $12 from Amazon.

So, I've been recommending and quoting from it since the earliest days on MLML before you started this forum, and numerous times here as well.  What took you so long?

I went ahead and bought a copy too, but it was only shipped today after I wrote an email asking them why the delay. I expected them to tell me that it was due to sudden, unexpected demand, but they only said that it was due to the fact that I chose the free shipping on amounts over $25 (I got a couple other books I was already thinking about getting anyway) but since they aim to please they would upgrade the shipping to 1-day for free. Very nice of them, I think. So, I should have it tomorrow.

I've had my copy at least 25 years. It's the 1972 reprint by The Gun Room Press.

For those of you just getting a copy,  take a gander at the instructions for making a wood forge.   I kid you not.  ;D

It is probably one of the first books I purchased on the subject and it is very interesting. Interesting bit about the book, if you happen to have a copy of The Modern Gunsmith by Howe you can see where he basically plagiarized entire sections from this book, the one on casehardening is particularly interesting. That being said, The Modern Gunsmith two volume set is also a very excellent book well worth getting.
