Why isn't there a Bag Makers Guild...

For the life of me....

Why don't we formalize a guild?

It is not for lack of talent, research, and history.....

Because in the old days a leather worker was usually considered a cobbler, which was one step up from a tanner, which were both one short step away from being homeless.
In real time, it would be very hard to determine what skills must be acquired to be a guilded leather worker. The bags made today can run the gamut, from finely finished gentleman's bags, to field made backwoods reproduction bags, so rustic they stink. With some folks rejecting well made primitive folk art reproductions, and accepting poorly researched "old timey" junk.

True arguments on technique....
,
The body of your argument ...May be the reasoning of the " why" we need a guild...

There is one in the works as an offshoot of the Horn making guild. An organizational meeting was held at this years CLA show. I'm sure more information will be forthcoming as they get organized.

I would wonder if a historical leatherworkers guild would be more serviceable to history instead of limiting to just pouches.
Pouches and purses were just a small facet of historical leatherworking and one would only be making them exclusively somewhere such as Paris.

Gizamo,
I was asked if I wanted to sign up for interest in this at CLA but I dont know who is involved and to what direction they intend. I think there are quite a few that would like to havd access to early input
Sounds like a good venture. I eagerly await more information and opportunity for input and participation.

Im with James....I would hope it will cover lots and lots of early leather work...from pistol buckets to fire buckets and everything in between.

I also believe one is being formalized, and I certainly want to be a member
as soon as its up and running, but thats about all I know about it to date...maybe after the show and seminar season slows down more info will come out?

Here is the answer to all your questions. We met at the CLA show. About 10-12 interested people were at the meeting. This will be a part of the Honourable Company of Horners, but will deal with the collection of information and documentation of original leather pieces, a network skilled leatherworkers to provide training and information to those starting out, seminars and demonstrations at the HCH annual conference and information in the tri-annual Guild publication. The HCH website will also be a resource. Possibly, in the future, we will set up a guild system like the one for the horn workers. Obviously, it will require joining the HCH but it will be well worth it and the dues are minimal. The two people that are spearheading this is Myself and Ken Scott. I am working on a Mission Statement and an announcement for all the appropriate venues to get the word out. I just returned from a 9 day hunt in Canada so I am a little behind. This will serve as the ALR being the very first group to receive the news. If you are interested, email me with your contact information and we will put you on the mailing list to receive all forthcoming info. My email address is ftwillis@ptd.net, or you can call me at 908-246-8935.- Frank Willis
