Crude Butt Plate
« on: October 08, 2013, 03:53:03 PM »
I saw an interesting rifle recently a friend of mine has. It is an original walnut (maybe butternut) stocked very plain and crude. Half stock large bore tapered and flared hand forged barrel. Might have been full stock at one time.  The thing that I noticed was the butt plate. It was a piece of copper extending from heel and bent around at toe to make a toe plate of sorts. In place of the comb part of the butt plate was a piece of iron forged with a hook to catch the top edge of the copper. Any one seen this treatment before on butt plate or is this unique? Sorry I didn't get a pic.

If you could get a picture or two I sure would appreciate it.  I am very interested in building a plain nothing fancy rifle.  If it gets scratched on problem if it gets wet no problem just dry it off.

Sorry, I was helping with  blacksmithing demonstrations at a festival where he had the gun on display. I didn't have a camera with me. Next time I see him I'll try to get some pictures. I could make a drawing of it but don't know how to post it.
