Finally finished another rifle!

This is another iron mounted fantasy gun. It is a chunk gun for me. It is iron mounted in my interpretation of a golden age Rockbridge Co, VA style. I imagined that I was a contemporary of John Davidson and an apprentice to the same master. The faceted comb and butt piece heel extension comes from his master and the carving and silver star is inspired by a John Davidson rifle. The rifle has been slightly aged with dirt and wear in the usual places.
I made everything but the lock, barrel, and triggers. The lock is obviously a Chambers Late Ketland. The barrel is a custom Getz; 1 1/8", straight, 46", 45 cal. The triggers are modified Davis.
Let me know what you think. My brother says it shows improvement.

Absolutely superb, Mark. Well executed carving. I like the patina of the wood finish, also.

That is a dandy! You got the carving just perfect for the genre, not textbook! The patchox is wonderful also, looks familiar to me
! Even the toeplate shows thought and not negligence. I'm still lukewarm on the idea of engraving iron mounts, but I like what you did with that also and it matches the character of the carving very well (I guess you had to do engraving with carving). Excellent work.

Mark, very nice. I like the way you made a heavey barreld gun look slim and sleek. I also like your carving and engraving. How much does the thing weigh?

Hey Mark,
Your rifle looks outstanding. I know nothing stylistically about southern guns, but I like the feel and character that your rifle has. Nothing looks out of place, just has a great appearance. Very nice work on the iron mounts too. Is the patchbox release built into the toeplate? Thanks for sharing,

The toe plate is a pressure plate for the patchbox release. As to weight, I haven't weighed it. It is heavy.

Many of you will be glad to know that I am done with the extreme creativity for a while.
It is back to traditional recreations of original guns.

Very well crafted long gun, and I might add: well conceived.

I haven't shot it yet. Perhaps next week when the sun comes out again. It has been raining here most of the week and will continue raining this weekend. I am looking forward to it. I am expecting nothing but X's.

Save you a whole lot of trouble, lead, and powder if'n you'll just ship it over here and I'll do all that nasty, dreary, lonely, range work for you. I'll even throw in the targets and some game-testing as well. Can have it back to you Prompt December.
I don't mind if it is a touch heavy.

Mark,
Very nice work, and I see the Rockbridge influence, very nice! You did an excellent job with the butt piece and trigger guard, love the faceted comb, and architecture. Well done and thanks for the photos!

A beautie for sure...
May I ask a "new bee" question...what does the term Fantasy Gun mean...it is just the fact it's not a direct copy of an original or does it point to style elements that are newly dated and have not been around in the 18th century? I think nowadays this is called "retro"...
thanks
Uwe
PS: 1 1/8", straight, 46", 45 cal....she must be very heavy

Really nice, Mark!
Uwe,
Here's a link to a Gary Brumfield web article on "fantasy rifles". In some cases it just means a rifle that has decoration that goes beyond the original tradition. It can also refer to pieces that are mixtures of elements from various schools, etc., That's in contrast to a piece that is a careful reproduction of antique designs from an original school of gunsmithing.

Mark,
Great looking gun. When I saw the finish in person I was concerned but I knew you had to rub it down etc. Now it looks great, far better than it did with the bright shine on it!
